Victory Day and the Celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Belarus
Victory Day is one of the most significant and heartfelt holidays for Belarus and the entire post-Soviet space. In 2025, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War - a date forever engraved in history as a symbol of courage, heroism, and national unity.
History and Significance of Victory Day
May 9, 1945, marked the end of the most devastating war in human history - the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. On this day, the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany was signed in Berlin. For millions of Soviet citizens, including Belarusians, it meant long-awaited peace, freedom, and the beginning of a new life. The war claimed the lives of over 27 million Soviet people, and Belarus - one of the hardest-hit republics - lost every third resident. The memory of those terrible days and the great feat of the people will forever remain in the hearts of Belarusians.
Traditions of Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Belarus
In 2025, the May 9 celebration takes on special significance - a jubilee that unites generations in gratitude and remembrance. In Minsk and other cities across the country, large-scale events will take place:
-
Solemn rallies and wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments and memorials, including the Mound of Glory and the Victory Monument.
-
A military parade in Minsk, which will be the main event of the celebration. The parade will feature modern troops as well as legendary military equipment from the Great Patriotic War - T-34 tanks, “Katyusha” rocket launchers, and horse-drawn carts. A spectacular flyover of military aircraft with flashing lights will add to the grandeur.
-
Festivals and concerts of patriotic songs, theatrical performances, workshops, and excursions will be held from May 1 to 11 in parks and cultural institutions.
-
A festive fireworks display that will light up the Minsk sky at several locations, including the main site near the Belarus Hotel.
The Meaning of the Holiday Today
Victory Day is not just a day off or a mass celebration. It is a day of remembrance and gratitude to those who defended freedom and independence, who gave their lives and health for future generations. For the Belarusian people, this holiday symbolizes resilience and unity, a reminder that peace and freedom come at a great cost.
The 80th anniversary of Victory is a time not only for celebration but also for passing historical truth to younger generations and preserving the memory of heroism and sacrifice. On this day, words of gratitude are spoken to veterans, wartime music is played, and the “Immortal Regiment” marches take place, uniting millions of people worldwide.
